Dalgona Coffee
This whipped instant coffee has taken the Internet world by storm. Us Indians have grown up making “phenti hui coffee”… a hand-whisked labor of love which follows essentially the same procedure with the addition of hot milk at the end to produce a cappuccino-like beverage (and very sore arms). This iced version is courtesy of South Korea. An easy recipe (sans the elbow grease) with just four ingredients, it can be prepared within minutes. I succumbed to temptation and made some today. I am not a regular coffee drinker, but with the mercury soaring, this sweet iced coffee hit the spot. Am documenting the recipe solely for the purpose of referring to it for future cravings. Note to self: On occasion, adding a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a shot of coffee liqueur wouldn’t hurt either.
Recipe
Dalgona Coffee
(Makes 3-4 servings)
Ingredients
4 tbsp instant coffee granules, more for topping
4 tbsp coconut/white sugar
4 tbsp hot water
3 cups chilled milk (any kind will do)
Plenty of ice cubes
Method
In a deep bowl, combine the coffee, sugar and hot water.
Using an electric hand mixer, whisk them until they turn pale, fluffy and very thick.
To assemble, fill glasses generously with ice cubes and pour in the milk until 3/4 full.
Spoon the whipped coffee mixture on top of the milk and spread evenly to cover the top of the milk.
Stir lightly with a spoon, sprinkle some instant coffee granules on top and enjoy!
